TL;DR's Passover Reflections
Dear reader,
As TL;DR readers and writers, we tend to be focused on what’s happening right now. Every day it seems there’s a new headline, a new tragedy, a new victory or glimmer of hope. Sometimes, it might feel like nothing like this has ever happened before, as though this moment of crisis is uniquely overwhelming and oppressive. Passover is an invitation to remember that this isn’t a new story, but an ancient one. We’ve lived through authoritarianism before. We’ve seen entire peoples persecuted, detained, forced into hard labor, and we’ve seen them freed.
As people who normally keep up with the headlines, perhaps we can all take this opportunity to look back in time and reframe the news we’re seeing as precisely not-news. The world we live in today has many parallels to the mitzrayim of the Exodus story. What can we learn from our history to change our collective future?
Here are some resources that might help:
- NAA’s Cups of Liberation Haggadah Supplement, which can be used alongside your primary Haggadah to connect the four cups of wine/juice/water to immigrants’ rights.
- From Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg’s blog, Life is a Sacred Text: Persevere.
- And from Rabbi Sandra Lawson’s blog, Tending the Ash: The Fire Must Not Go Out.
Please note that there won’t be a newsletter going out next week because of the holiday, but if you miss anti-fascist, pro-immigrant information, consider registering with Never Again Action’s political education team on April 12th for “Breaking Bread to Bash the Fash”. And we’ll be back in your inboxes the week of April 13.
Next year, in a world without borders!
Chag Sameach,
NAA Content Team
P.S. This Passover, we need to raise $7,200 (4 x chai) to power Never Again Action's Leadership Gathering in May, part of our Derekh Tzedek or "Path of Justice" strategy process. Will you help fill one of our cups? You can give directly to the Fill Our Cups, Fund the Resistance campaign at this link, or you can make a tax deductible donation via our fiscal sponsor at this link.
