Mamdani says ICE agents who shot man in New York looked like ‘mass shooters’

ICE agents wearing construction vests and masks shot and wounded Oscar Belgal, 28, during an enforcement operation while he was in his car with his five-year-old child. Belgal was struck in the neck and urgently needs surgery to remove the bullet lodged there. His legal team is not sure when or if he will be treated. In the meantime the wounded man is enduring "deplorable conditions" in federal jail.

The NYPD has released surveillance video showing immigration agents approaching Belgal's car as he tries to drive away with his 5-year-old son in the backseat. An agent is seen firing at least seven shots at the car. After viewing the video, New York mayor Mamdani commented that the scene suggested a mass shooting rather than someone representing the federal government. He has spoken to both Donald Trump and to head of DHS Markwayne Mullin to say he wants ICE out of New York.

ICE arrests have hit record levels. The agency reached those numbers after pivoting from the high-profile raids it carried out in 2025 to more quietly dispatching agents into communities across the US.

Renee Good’s family speaks out, files 2 lawsuits

The family of Renee Good, who an ICE officer executed on the streets of Minneapolis, have filed two lawsuits regarding Good’s wrongful killing. The first suit seeks to hold the federal government liable under the Federal Tort Claims Act (essentially the main way civilians can sue the government for wrongdoing). The second suit explicitly names Good’s killer Johnathan Ross, as well as the fascist lackeys who put Ross in Minneapolis, including Stephen Miller and Kristi Noem.

In the press conference announcing the suits, Good’s widow spoke publicly for the first time. “She was pure love. And she was funny, and she was smart, and she was gorgeous… we were all robbed.”

Good’s brother Brent Ganger said the family was filing the lawsuits to “put officials on notice that we have not forgotten.”

DHS Border Wall Construction Leads to Surveillance of Tohono O’odham Nation

This past Monday many of us marked Indigenous People’s Day. Rather than celebrating colonizers, we choose to hold in our hearts the memory of people killed and civilizations destroyed when Europeans came to Turtle Island.

It was therefore extremely disheartening to read in ProPublica how DHS is perpetuating abuse of The Tohono O’odham Nation. As has so often happened, the US has reneged on its agreements and used intimidation and force to try to get Native people to stop advocating for their rights. Please take a moment to hear O'odham folks speaking of what this has done to them.

ICE raids Ilhan Omar’s Home

This past Monday, mere weeks before voters go to the polls for the midterms, ICE has raided Rep. Ilhan Omar’s home in Washington DC. Rep. Omar is one of the most public refugees in the US, who also happens to be up for reelection in the U.S. Congress in this voting cycle.

Rep. Omar is not charged with any crime. The Trump administration's ICE cronies are at the forefront of helping the MAGA movement do anything to turn the tides of the election in their favor, and Rep. Omar has gotten caught up in the crosshairs of their plan. In the past, right wing media has falsely claimed that Omar married her brother in order to gain citizenship, and this time they are questioning the validity of her citizenship papers.

ACTION ITEM: Is your voter registration up to date? If it is, have you asked 5-10 people in your life if theirs is? This upcoming election and its outcome, more than anything, is a referendum on whether or not we still have a semblance of democracy in this country. Check out the NAA Election Protective Presence Guide to figure out other ways you and your friends can plug in.

Trump immigrant purge could cut social security for Americans by $2,000 a year

The violence perpetrated by ICE in our streets comes at a high cost in terms of human lives, constitutional rights, local communities and, according to a new study, household economies across the nation. Commissioned by the immigrant advocacy group America’s Voice, the report “Economic Impacts of Trump Administration Immigration Policy” was conducted by researchers at Economic Insights and Research Consulting, a firm focused on economic analysis.

The current administration has focused on terrorizing foreign-born communities in the name of advancing national prosperity. But the report shows that the billions of dollars spent to wreak havoc and instill fear have a very different economic impact. Deporting immigrant workers has caused chaos in a wide variety of industries, from construction to retail to agriculture, resulting in job loss and higher prices for everyone.

While our collective tax dollars pay for military hardware for under-trained ICE recruits, lack of crucial immigrant labor impedes agricultural production, driving prices for produce and dairy products up. At a time when the cost of living continues to spiral upwards, senior citizens dependent on social security benefits can expect to see an annual loss of $2000.

None of us are free until all of us are free! Defunding ICE and the detention-industrial complex is the road to collective prosperity and wellbeing. Until then, our tax dollars purchase warfare on our streets while our households face bankruptcy.
