Zohran Mamdani Wins Historic NYC Mayoral Race

Democrats swept elections across the US last Tuesday, including Zohran Mamdani, a Muslim Democratic Socialist immigrant, winning the NYC mayoral race.

In a contentious campaign where his main opponent, former NY Governor Andrew Cuomo tried to paint Mamdani as a “radical Islamist Marxist” who, among other things, wouldn’t keep Jewish New Yorkers safe because of his views on Israel, Jewish and Muslim New Yorkers working on Mamdani’s campaign banded together to send the message that the safety of all NYC residents stems from solidarity with each other. While Cuomo spent time using racist AI ads and other tactics to attack Mamdani, the Mamdani campaign focused on promising better material conditions for working class people in NYC.

His campaign mobilized over 100k NYC residents (1% of the city's population) to phone bank, canvas, and do GOTV, which is a huge win for progressive organizing.

Armed ICE agents in Chicago drag daycare worker out of facility and arrest her

The horrors inflicted upon the people of greater Chicago by the Trump administration’s ICE secret police were on full display after video emerged from a raid on Wednesday, November 5th that showed agents chasing a woman into a daycare, dragging her out in full view of the children inside, and arresting her.

This latest atrocity took place at the Rayito de Sol daycare center - coming less than a week after highly publicized attacks on communities throughout Chicago, including ICE tear-gassing kids at a Halloween event.

On the same day, November 5, ICE agents faced scrutiny from a lawsuit filed by protestors and media organizations alleging excessive force by ICE agents. The judge issued a temporary restraining order. It remains to be seen if ICE is capable of restraint.

Feds Tell Faith Leaders 'No More Prayer' Outside Broadview Facility

An anonymous federal representative told demonstrators at a “Faith over Fear” rally Friday that there would be “no more prayer” in front of or inside the ICE facility located in Broadview, a west suburb of Chicago.

Broadview Police Chief Thomas Mills said that he was “trying to figure out” in discussions with Mayor Katrina Thompson and an attorney if a federal agency could legally ban religious gatherings on land owned by the village. Religious groups previously have been allowed to practice outside the facility, he said.

“I’m dumbfounded,” the police chief told a Block Club Chicago reporter. “Every time I talk with [federal officials], it feels like their rules keep changing. We don’t really know what’s happening.”

During the call, the anonymous representative told faith leaders and activists, with the reporter present, that “There is no more prayer in front of building or inside the building because this is the state and it’s not [of a] religious background.”

The Faith over Fear rally will be held on the first Friday of every month from November forward, organizers said. Since Oct. 3, protesters have largely confronted a “Unified Command” made up of the Broadview Police Department, Cook County Sheriff’s Office and Illinois State Police.
Over 70 protesters have been arrested by state and local forces since the Unified Command established “free speech zones” for protesters to assemble.

Judge rules Trump administration failed to meet legal requirements for deploying troops to Portland

In a victory for our movements, a Trump-appointed federal judge has found that the administration has no business sending troops into Portland, Oregon. Despite the administration’s allegations of the city being a war ravaged hellhole, the 106-page decision asserted that conditions on the ground did not justify federal intervention. Justice Karin Immergut asserted that Trump’s vision of the city is “simply untethered to the facts.” As it turns out, simply being a progressive city with a democratic mayor is not a cause to call out the military.

ICE Isn't Letting the Shutdown Stop It From Spending Big on Ads

During the first three weeks of the government shutdown alone, ICE and CBP spent nearly $10,000,000 on recruitment ads in the US, according to researchers interviewed by Rolling Stone. The same researchers said that it is also known that the agencies were purchasing ads in Mexico in the same timeframe, though it was impossible to know how much was spent. All this as ICE and CBP agents were among the miniscule percentage of government workers being paid during the shutdown, and new hires were still being promised their $50k signing bonus.

It’s difficult to imagine how that money could have been better spent. Oh wait, it’s not: just ask any of the thousands of government workers who were laid off, the hundreds of thousands who were furloughed, the millions whose SNAP benefits were threatened or suspended… just to name a few.
