All undocumented migrants required to register, and other horrific authoritarian ideas

The apparatus for detention and deportation is expanding. This should be terrifying for all of us, but it will harm, terrorize and traumatize our immigrant neighbors first. In recent weeks, we’ve seen the current administration lay the groundwork for destroying due process by exporting imprisonment to a place where American citizens can, according to the administration, simply disappear.
At home, we’ve seen the demand for immigrants to self-register with the government, and for massive funding for deportation enforcement--which means more terror in our neighborhoods and more vulnerable people caught in the detention-deportation pipeline.
Yet, resistance is possible. The seeds of institutional pushback are being planted, and grassroots resistance is ramping up. See below for opportunities to get involved.

Trump administration wants $45 billion to build a vast gulag apparatus in the United States
This staggering sum of money represents a nightmare scenario for the people in the crosshairs of the right wing hate machine. Trump and his allies are seeking ten times the normal expenditure rate, to ramp up their kidnapping and imprisonment apparatus, all while in the midst of shredding any remaining vestiges of due process.

Federal judge skeptical of national registry for undocumented immigrants
This Friday, April 11th, a new rule will go into effect that would require all immigrants to “register” with the US government or face criminal charges, or possibly detention and deportation. “Everyone… must register, give fingerprints and provide an address, the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement.”
According to a Tuesday article in the Courthouse News Service, The Coalition for Humane Immigrant rights along with a few other groups have led the charge in suing the administration for attempting to enact this law in such a short period of time.
There’s still time to leave a public comment on this racist, xenophobic law DT is trying to enact. Take 5 minutes to use this toolkit to make public comment.

Institutional Resistance is Possible: Tufts Administration and SEIU Back Rümeysa Öztürk
Last week, seven days after doctoral student Rümeysa Öztürk was kidnapped off the street in Somerville, MA, by plain-clothes, masked ICE officers, the Tufts University Office of the President released a statement in support of a motion filed by Rümeysa Öztürk’s legal team. The statement affirms that Öztürk, along with the rest of Tuft’s international students, faculty, and staff, are valued members of the community whose work and freedom of movement is essential to the ability of the university to carry out its mission. In addition, it affirms that the University has found no evidence that Öztürk was in violation of any Tufts policies, nor the Immigration and Naturalization Act, and pleads for due process and an immediate release so that Öztürk can return to her studies.
A couple of days later, SEIU Local 509, the union of which Rümeysa is a member, projected over Boston Commons images of Rümeysa with the words “Free Rümeysa Now!” and “No scabs, no fascists.”
These acts of institutional support for the disappeared and explicit resistance to the blatant and sweeping attacks on academic freedom and freedom of movement generally are unfortunately the exceptions to the rule of anticipatory institutional compliance with the Trump regime. Still, they are encouraging developments that come as the result of massive public uprising in support of Rümeysa Öztürk.
A judge is considering releasing Öztürk on bail while her case moves through the courts. Let’s keep up the heat.
